President Rodrigo Roa Duterte already said that he would not allow another takeover of housing units by Kadamay.
Yesterday in Barangay Felisa in Bacolod city, around 1,000 informal settlers tried to occupy a housing project intended for policemen and members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The militant Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) , the informal settlers brought some of heir personal belongings and their children. They said they would only leave the place if the housing officials of the National Housing Authority (NHA) would meet with them.
The P162-million housing project, lies on a 10-hectare lot. Kadamay claims only eight units have so far been occupied.
Ireneo Longinos, Kadamay secretary-general, claims that there is a joint resolution of the Senate and the House of representatives to which the President agreed and signed, authorizing the NHA to award unoccupied housing units to qualified informal settlers.
Longinos, calls out the NHA for not updating the status of such resolution with respect to their petition to have their own housing units provided by the government.
“This housing project has not been used since six years ago... It should be given to qualified beneficiaries,” he said.
Alejandro Ongsuco, NHA-Bacolod head said he was surprised by the actions of the Kadamay group since there is a scheduled meeting with them and the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines next month.
Ongsuco explains that the housing units they have tried to forcibly occupy have already been awarded to the uniformed personnel, and the only reason that it has not been occupied is because there is no electricity yet in the area.
The PNP through its Civil Disturbance Management unit as well as Station 7 and 10 of the Bacolod police/ personnel have been tasked to maintain peace and order in the area.
